Forensic Identification Division

Ident

The Forensic Identification Division is comprised of specially trained police officers who respond to crime scenes in order to forensically process them. This is accomplished in some cases by using sophisticated equipment and training to find, record, gather, analyze and evaluate physical evidence.

The Unit is further trained in packaging and preserving evidence that may be sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences Unit in Toronto for further scientific examination.

The unit also includes a Scenes of Crime Officers Program, in which specially trained officers in the Community Patrol Division process select crime scenes and forward the evidence to headquarters for further evaluation and processing.

When an investigation proceeds through the judicial process, the Unit's specially trained officers deliver expert testimony in court on fingerprint and footwear identification, physical matches and photography.
