Cornwall, ON - It’s that time of year again, when the children and teenagers are back to school. The Cornwall Community Police Service is looking for your help in making our community safe. .

After a two month absence drivers are starting to see school crossing guards and school buses on our roadways. We ask the motorist to watch for the crossing guards/school buses and respect their stop signs. A motorist who does not obey the stop sign of a crossing guard can be fined $180.00 and those who do not obey the stop sign and flashing lights of a school bus can be fined $490.00 and accumulate 6 demerit points.

With the public’s safety in mind the Cornwall Community Police Service will be taking an aggressive approach with a “zero tolerance approach” on the enforcement of these types of violations. School bus operators will be carrying School Bus Violation Forms that will be completed and turned over to police for investigation when they spot a motorist not stopping for a school bus. These forms contain details of the offence such as: licence number of the offending vehicle, location, date & time of the offence and description of the driver. The forms submitted will be fully investigated and charges will be laid when applicable.

In conclusion, we would like to remind all motorists to be on the lookout for children on their way to school, and to be prepared to stop for school crossing guards and school buses.
