Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Police Service would like to warn the public of door-to-door sales scams circulating in the Cornwall area.

On March 1, 2018, a new law came into effect in Ontario, banning the door-to-door sale of a long list of household appliances and services. We would like to remind residents of these changes, as certain products and services can no longer be offered or sold at your home unless you initiate the transaction by calling/emailing and requesting that the business attends your residence.

These restricted products and services include:

• Furnaces
• Air conditioners
• Air cleaners
• Air purifiers
• Water heaters
• Water treatment devices
• Water purifiers
• Water filters
• Water softeners
• Duct cleaning services
• Any good or service that performs or combines one or more of the above functions

Residents should always be cautious when dealing with someone they do not know. Always ask for proper identification and do not let anyone you do not know into your house. Talk to a family member or someone you trust before making any decisions or providing any personal information. Remember, you do not have to sign a contract on the spot! You can always request a business card to follow-up with the information at a later time after speaking to someone you trust to confirm if the information is legitimate.

Together we can make “Cornwall a safer place for all to enjoy”.
